A fire extinguisher is one of the most important accessories you need to have in your caravan because your caravan’s safety, its occupants, and your items inside can really depend on a working firefighter. It is extremely important that you inspect the extinguisher before starting your trips.

Keep in mind that the fire extinguisher must be securely installed and must be working for your whole trip. Most fire extinguishers do not indicate any expiration, so you must check the date when was the last time you use it.

If it’s five years from now – or even older, contact your service provider. When you’re doing this, it doesn’t hurt to check your smoke alarm if it is working and that your first aid kit is in full stock.

2. Air Conditioners

Air conditioners are one of the most frequently purchased parts for caravan and an integral part of a holiday trip. The first important thing to consider before choosing is that you cannot choose a regular home air conditioner for your caravan. Choose the caravan air conditioning system, which is specially designed for movement and vibration while driving to prevent water from entering the vehicle.

The next important choice you have to make is between the roof and the built-in model. As a rule of thumb, rooftop air conditioners work very well in most cases, allowing for efficient air circulation. Check your caravan and see if what air conditioner is perfect for it.

3. Battery

The batteries in your caravan are responsible for powering all your energy-consuming gadgets and appliances while traveling. Suppose you are going to store your caravan for an extended period of time. In that case, the battery should be completely disconnected and moved to a dry and accessible place such as your garage, where it can be recharged every few weeks.

Before going on a caravan holiday trip, you should check that the battery is fully charged. If you charged it and it appears dead, take it to a service center to check for leaks or other damage, as it may need to be replaced.

The cassette toilet should be cleaned and emptied on a regular basis. Make sure you are using the correct chemicals in your waste tanks. Another important task is to inspect, clean, and lubricate all seals in the cassette and the valve seats that seal the toilet from the waste tank below.

In the latter case, use silicone lubricants and avoid petrolatum. For long-term storage of the caravan, keep the valve half-open to prevent it from getting stuck in the closed position.

5. Refrigerator

Although caravan refrigerators usually do not require much maintenance, they do need to be cleaned from time to time. Thoroughly clean the inside of your fridge or freezer. When storing your caravan, keep the refrigerator door open and place a dehumidifier inside the caravan to avoid mold formation or odor.

Before you go on your next trip, remember to inspect the door seal of your refrigerator for any gaps or cracks.

6. Water Tanks

Clean water is an important part of caravanning. Caravan water tanks, especially with drinking water, must be cleaned thoroughly between trips.

Before storing the water tank, empty and clean it and let it dry completely, this prevents mold from forming. In fact, all water-containing systems like hot water tanks must undergo this inspection regularly.

Also, keep in mind that all devices, gadgets, and electronics in the caravan require some basic maintenance, so always check your user manual for the guidelines. Keeping your caravan accessories up-to-date eliminates the need to replace them before the estimated maintenance period expires. A well-packed caravan makes vacations easy and enjoyable. While it may cost a bit to buy the accessories you need, it saves you time, money, and hassle down the road.
